Author/Poet-in-Residence Program
Who is Valerie Bolling?
Valerie is passionate about creating stories in which all children can see themselves and feel seen and heard, valued and validated. She is the author of eight traditionally published picture books (five of which are written in rhyme) and a Scholastic Acorn early reader series.
In addition, Valerie has published articles about the writing process, using poetry in the classroom, and the importance of diverse books. In 2022 she was a featured author in CT Governor’s Summer Reading program, and she has won awards as an author as well as an educator.
A product of both public (grades K – 6) and independent (grades 7 – 12) schools, Valerie is a graduate of Tufts University and Columbia University, Teachers College. She has been an educator for 30 years, teaching and working as an instructional coach in elementary, middle, and high schools. Valerie has taught students how to write a variety of poems, and their poems have won awards and been published in poetry anthologies. Currently, she teaches classes to adults writing for children (independently and for the Highlights Foundation), presents at conferences, and visits as many schools, libraries, and bookstores as she can.
What is the Author/Poet-in-Residence Program?
Most authors visit a school for one day. The author/poet-in-residence program allows your students and teachers to make a connection with an author who will remain at your school for one or two weeks.
During the residency, Valerie will tailor a program to meet the needs of your students and faculty. She can work with students, reading aloud her books as well as teaching writing lessons. With more than a decade of experience as an instructional coach, Valerie is able to partner with teachers to discuss best practices, collaborate on classroom instruction, and support a school-wide DEI or literacy initiative. The residency program may also include events outside of the school day, such as attending your school's book fair, conducting a writing or poetry workshop, or facilitating book club for your families.
